Almost always the depth. Calgary's frost line is 48 inches. Posts set above that move with the ground every freeze-thaw cycle — which is every winter. Over a few years, that movement adds up and the post leans. Kevin sets every post past the frost line with a concrete footing. It doesn't move.
Cedar is the most popular for a reason — it handles Calgary's temperature swings without warping, looks great, and lasts 20+ years with basic maintenance. Composite is growing fast because it needs nothing — no staining, no sealing, ever. Aluminum is the modern choice for front yards and contemporary homes. Vinyl works but can crack at -30°C. Kevin will tell you which one makes sense for your yard.
Generally no — fences up to 2 metres (about 6.5 ft) don't require a permit in Calgary. There are exceptions for corner lots, fences near intersections, and some communities with specific bylaws. Kevin checks this before the job starts. If there's a permit needed, he'll flag it.
