Almost always the base. The stones on top look fine in year one regardless of what's underneath. What determines whether a patio survives year five and year ten is the depth and compaction of the gravel base. Calgary's freeze-thaw cycles move ground that isn't properly prepared. A 4–6 inch compacted base is not optional — it's what separates a patio that lasts from one that needs to be re-done.

Because Calgary's freeze-thaw cycle is brutal on solid surfaces. A concrete slab will crack — that's not a scare tactic, it's physics. Paving stones flex slightly with the ground movement. And when one stone does crack or heave, you lift it out and replace that stone. Not the whole patio. That repairability is worth a lot over 10–15 years.

Paving stones are manufactured — consistent size, colour, and thickness. Natural stone (flagstone, slate, limestone) is quarried — each piece is unique, irregular, and has a more organic look. Natural stone costs more, takes more skill to install, and looks higher-end. Paving stones are more uniform and easier to repair. Both are excellent choices — it comes down to the look you want and your budget.

Porcelain pavers are fired ceramic tiles engineered for outdoor use — frost-rated, non-porous, and precision-cut. They don't stain, don't fade, and don't need sealing. The look is modern and very high-end. They cost more because the material itself is expensive and the installation requires more precision. If you want something that looks different from every other patio on the street, this is it.

A straightforward paving stone patio takes 2–4 days once materials are on site. Natural stone and custom shapes take longer — 4–7 days. No permits required for ground-level patios, so there's no waiting on the city. The main scheduling factor is Kevin's availability, which is why getting assessed early in the season matters.
